Organic & Quality Essential Oils

Discover the different organic certifications, the important mentions to know, the Pure Quality Charter...

ORGANIC ESSENTIAL OILS:

To be organically produced, an essential oil must comply with the official regulations for organic farming and have been inspected by an approved body. This certification ensures that the production of the essential oil has excluded the use of pesticides, fertilizers or any other chemical product.

Why are there several ORGANIC certifications?

For essential oils, there are 2 types of ORGANIC certifications:

  • GREEN LIFE ECOCERT CERTIFICATION for Organic essential oils with a cosmetics status
  • ECOCERT AB CERTIFICATION for organic essential oils with a food supplements status

The mention Organic Farming concerns only the method of cultivation and not the method of distillation, which is also an important criterion to be taken into account when judging the quality of essential oil.

Certification Organic Essentials Oils

DID YOU KNOW?

Not all essential oils can be found organically, because of the remoteness of some cultivation sites, the fact that some plants are wild, that they grow in countries where there is no organic certification or because producers do not enter organic chains for financial reasons. It would be far too expensive for them to set up such control structures. However, this does not prevent them from working in a traditional way and without using pesticides.

WHY DO SOME ESSENTIAL OILS COST MORE THAN OTHERS?

Large differences between several brands are always due to a difference in quality.

Moreover, within the same range, pistachio mastic essential oil costs about three times more than tea tree essential oil. This is quite normal, this price directly reflects the "yield" of the plant. Some plants give a lot of essential oil - for example, cloves, from which 1kg of essential oil is extracted from 10 kg of cloves - and others do not - for example, the rose, which gives only a few grams of essential oil per 100 kg of flowers!

This random yield largely explains the large price differences between one essential oil and another. There can also be a shortage due to bad weather conditions affecting the harvest and therefore the price! We can say that essential oils have a price like gold or diamonds!
