What are vegetable oils used for ?
Vegetable oils are used as complements to essential oils. They are particularly useful for diluting essential oils before performing massages or applying them to the skin. They are essential, as some essential oils can be irritating.
What is an essential oil ?
An essential oil is a liquid and aromatic extract, typically obtained through steam distillation from a plant, and it concentrates the plant’s volatile active compounds. It represents the essence of the plant in a concentrated form and contains a wide variety of active substances, precisely identified through chromatographic analysis.
What are the 6 golden rules for safe use ?
- Strictly respect dosages, precautions for use, duration of use, and route of administration: these are extracts that must be used rigorously. Always keep your essential oil in its original packaging, with its instructions, which you can refer to at any time.
- Never substitute one essential oil for another without proper knowledge, even if their names are similar: for example, true lavender and spike lavender have different compositions, as do thyme with thymol and thyme with linalool, ravensara and ravintsara.
- Always wash your hands thoroughly after using an essential oil.
- Do not strongly heat essential oils (e.g., by placing a dish over a candle). Use a cold-air nebulizing diffuser, a gentle ceramic heat diffuser, or a mist diffuser.
- Respect precautions for use. Many essential oils are prohibited during pregnancy (especially the first trimester) and while breastfeeding. For children, some are not recommended before the age of 7. If you have a history of kidney or liver issues, convulsive disorders, cardiovascular conditions, or if you suffer from epilepsy, asthma, or are under medical treatment for chronic illness, always seek your doctor’s advice.
- If you are on medication, be careful about interactions with essential oils! Don’t hesitate to ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
How is an essential oil obtained ?
The two traditional methods for obtaining essential oils are cold expression (for citrus peels) and steam distillation, which suits most plants. This involves passing steam through the plant material to release the essences from their tiny glandular pockets and then collecting them, after condensation, as essential oil. It’s an entirely natural process, yielding a perfectly pure product.
Can essential oils be mixed ?
Yes, and in fact, essential oils, effective on their own, are often even more powerful when combined in synergy.
How to choose a high-quality essential oil ?
Since 2008, the AFSSAPS (now ANSM, the French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety) has developed quality standards to regulate essential oil use and ensure better control. A high-quality essential oil should bear the following labels:
- HEBBD (botanically and biochemically defined essential oil) and 100% pure and natural – guarantees traceability, quality, and strict control.
- 100% pure – meaning no addition of other essential oils, vegetable oils, or solvents.
- 100% natural – meaning free of chemical additives (mineral essences, synthetic molecules, etc.).
- Traceability must be fully controlled. Every batch should be systematically tested (e.g., gas chromatography).
What key details should you check before buying an essential oil ?
- The Latin name, to avoid confusion.
- The chemotype, to ensure correct properties. For exemple, there are 7 main thyme chemotypes, each with different indications and uses.
- The expiration date.
- The batch number.
- The plant part used ("OP" – organ producer).
- The method of use and dosage, which vary by oil.
- Usage precautions.
- The equivalence (e.g., 1 ml = x drops).
Why can’t all essential oils be found as organic ?
Not all essential oils can be found in organic form because some cultivation sites are remote, some plants are wild, or they grow in countries where no organic certification exists. It’s best to purchase certified organic essential oils whenever possible.
How and for how long can essential oils be stored ?
Essential oils should be kept away from light and heat (ideally between 3 and 30°C). Oils like rose, thyme with thymol, or peppermint can crystallize at low temperatures (this does not affect their quality—they liquefy again at room temperature).
Store them in their original packaging (with the leaflet) to avoid confusion, keep them tightly closed (they are oxidizable and volatile), and upright (to prevent the oil from degrading the dropper and cap, which are made of plastic).
When properly stored, essential oils can last about 5 years (only 3 years for citrus oils; 2 years for oils derived from conifer needles, such as Scots pine). Keep out of reach of children.
Why are some essential oils colored ?
It’s normal for some essential oils to have color. For example, thyme with thymol can be blood red; bergamot may be green; and lavender, pale yellow. The color of an essential oil may depend on the plant itself and the material of the still used: for instance, a copper still can produce pink wintergreen oil, while an aluminum still may yield light yellow oil.
How should essential oils be packaged ?
Essential oils should be packaged in dark glass bottles (not plastic), as this helps preserve them since they are sensitive to UV light. For added safety, choose bottles with tamper-proof caps and child-resistant safety closures.
What complementary products are essential for proper use of essential oils ?
Essential oils can be used through various methods: orally, through inhalation, topically, or via atmospheric diffusion. The method depends on the properties of the oil, usage precautions, user age, etc.
To use essential oils properly, you need a complementary product: a vegetable oil (for topical use), a neutral tablet or edible vegetable oil (for oral use), or a neutral base (for baths and showers).
Refer to product labels and healthcare professional advice for proper usage and precautions.
How should essential oils be taken orally ?
Although traditionally known to be very useful and effective for conditions affecting the digestive tract, liver, and kidneys, some essential oils are not suitable for oral use due to their toxicity. It is absolutely essential to seek advice from your pharmacist or doctor before ingesting them.
Oral administration allows for very precise dosing, which must be strictly followed, and their use should remain limited.
Never place essential oils directly into your mouth, as they can irritate or burn mucous membranes. They must always be taken with a carrier: a sugar cube, a spoonful of honey, or edible vegetable oil.
Ideally, use a neutral tablet, which is practical and recommended for those on sugar-free diets or with diabetes.
Some essential oils can also be used in cooking.
Caution : Before swallowing any essential oil, it is absolutely necessary to verify that it is safe to do so!
Can essential oils be used via rectal or vaginal routes ?
The rectal and vaginal routes are occasional and strictly reserved for prescription-based compounded preparations, prepared in pharmacies by healthcare professionals.
No essential oil should ever be:
- injected intramuscularly,
- instilled in the eyes,
- applied pure on irritated or sensitive areas,
- introduced into the ear canal or the anogenital area.
What to do in case of contact between essential oils and the eyes or mucous membranes ?
Rinse immediately and thoroughly, preferably with a vegetable oil (such as cooking oil). If none is available, rinse with plenty of clear water. Then, consult a doctor or a poison control center.
What to do in case of accidental ingestion ?
Immediately contact a poison control center.
What does it mean when an essential oil is phototoxic ?
Some essential oils, such as lemon or sweet orange, are phototoxic. This means they should not be used before sun exposure, as they can cause skin reactions when exposed to UV rays.
How are vegetable oils obtained ?
Vegetable oils are extracted from seeds, fruit kernels, or plants.
What is a hydrolat ?
A hydrolat is an aromatic water (called floral water when derived from flowers). It is the residual water obtained after separating the essential oil during steam distillation. Hydrolats are much less concentrated in active compounds (between 0.02% and 0.20%) than essential oils.
Why combine a vegetable oil with an essential oil ?
Vegetable oil acts as a carrier for essential oils. It helps:
- facilitate their penetration into the skin,
- reduce their irritating effects,
- soften and protect the skin.
Why don’t your products always smell exactly the same ?
Our products may indeed show olfactory variations from one batch to another. However, their formulas and the naturally occurring biochemical components in the essential oils remain within the accepted variation standards as defined by our quality control protocols and current regulations (such as those of AFNOR, the European Pharmacopoeia, etc.).
Our essential oils are 100% natural, 100% pure, and unrectified plant-based substances. The aromatic molecule composition of essential oils depends on environmental factors such as climate and geography (sun exposure, humidity, location, altitude, soil composition, etc.).
At Puressentiel, our essential oils are selected based on their biochemical composition, not merely their scent. This is unlike the essential oils used in the perfume, cosmetics, detergent, or food industries, which prioritize a standardized fragrance or aroma.
Therefore, Puressentiel aromatherapy products may not always have exactly the same fragrance, unlike perfumery products or other industrial goods that are often rectified (modified by adding or removing natural or synthetic molecules) to maintain a consistent scent.
Moreover, each of our products that contain blends of multiple essential oils may exhibit noticeable scent differences from batch to batch. However, these do not affect the product’s intrinsic properties.
The olfactory variations you may notice from one batch to another are, in fact, a sign of the product’s complete natural origin and do not compromise its quality or effectiveness. These scent differences are ultimately a mark of quality, reflecting a product that is 100% pure and natural.
