Our natural recipes to soothe cough
What is a cough?
Coughing is a natural defence reflex to expel mucus or irritants from the airways. It is caused when the airways are irritated or congested by infectious, environmental or allergenic agents.
There are different types of cough such as dry, wet, chronic or acute. Discover all our recipes using essential oils to help you relieve your cough.
How to relieve day-to-day coughs
Dilute 2 drops of Cypress essential oil* and 2 drops of Black Spruce essential oil in 1 teaspoon of Black Cumin vegetable oil.
Massage into the chest and upper back 3 times a day. For those aged 15 years and over only.
Mix 2 drops of Black Spruce essential oil and 1 drop of Peppermint essential oil in 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil (use half Macadamia, half Black Cumin for best results).
Massage the chest with the mixture, morning, noon and night, for a maximum of 4 to 6 days. For adults only.
How to soothe a dry cough and hoarseness
A dry cough doesn’t produce mucus, and is usually an irritant cough. It’s often brief but intense because the coughing fits it causes are particularly exhausting.
Mix 1 drop of Cypress essential oil, 1 drop of Eucalyptus Radiata essential oil, 1 drop of Lavender essential oil, 1 drop of Green Myrtle essential oil and 1 drop of Thyme Linalool essential oil into 2 teaspoons of Sweet Almond vegetable oil.
Apply the mixture to the back and chest. For those aged 7 years and over
How to soothe a wet cough
A wet cough causes secretions to be expelled from the throat, trachea and bronchi. It plays a positive role in clearing the airways, so contributes to the healing process.
Dilute 3 drops of Siberian Fir essential oil and 3 drops of Eucalyptus Globulus essential oil OR Myrtle essential oil in 8 drops of Macadamia vegetable oil.
Massage the mixture into the sternum and upper back, 3 times a day for an adult, 2 times a day for a child. For those aged 7 and over only.
Mix 3 or 4 drops of Atlas Cedar essential oil into 8 drops of Sweet Almond vegetable oil.
Massage the chest and soles of the feet with this mixture every morning and evening for 5 to 7 days. For those aged 12 and over only.
Pour 1 drop of Eucalyptus Globulus essential oil, 1 drop of Sweet Woodruff essential oil and 1 drop of Green Myrtle essential oil directly onto a handkerchief. Inhale 5 to 6 times throughout the day. For those aged 7 and over.

How to alleviate a smoker's cough
Smoker's cough is very common in heavy tobacco users. It’s actually one of the main causes of chronic irritative cough. It’s due to the irritation of the bronchial tubes by the toxic substances in cigarette, cigar or pipe smoke.
We recommend that you consult a doctor to develop a long-term treatment for this form of cough to prevent it from getting worse.
Apply 2 drops of Myrtle essential oil andd 2 drops of Black Spruce essential oil diluted in 5 drops of each of Black Cumin and Sweet Almond vegetable oil.
Rub onto the soles of the feet, the chest or the sides of the neck, every morning and evening for one week. For adults only.
Pour 1 drop of Myrtle essential oil onto a handkerchief.
Inhale at the onset of symptoms to stop a smoker's coughing fit.

How to relieve bronchial cough
Apply 3 drops of Myrrh essential oil diluted in 4 drops of a neutral vegetable oil (Sweet Almond would be perfect!) to the chest 3 to 4 times a day, for 4 to 5 days.

How can I calm a spasmodic cough or coughing fit?
Spasmodic cough is a type of dry cough related to a spasm of the bronchi. It occurs in the form of short, irrepressible coughing spells.
How to soothe a cough due to tracheitis
Tracheitis is an inflammation of the trachea, which connects the larynx to the bronchi and ensures the passage of air while we breathe. Tracheitis causes a dry cough that is resistant to allopathic treatments. The coughing fit is the main symptom of tracheitis in adults and children.
Add 60 drops (≈ 2 ml) of Eucalyptus Globulus essential oil and 10 drops of Siberian Fir essential oil to your diffuser. For those aged 7 years and over only.
