Which essential oils are safe for diffusion?
Many essential oils are safe for diffusion, pure or diluted. We will list them and share some of our favourite recipes.
Diffusion is a quick and easy way to administer essential oils. It is very effective for all ENT L.R.O.¹, sleep or stress concerns. Essential oils are absorbed through the respiratory tract and penetrate the mucous membranes. They stimulate the olfactory receptors located at the top of the nasal cavity. In this way, information is transmitted to the limbic system, a strategic area of the brain that regulates emotions and behaviour. Their effect can therefore be physical... but also psychological.
However, some essential oils are not compatible with diffusion, especially when used in their pure state. Care should be taken with the following essential oils as they can be very irritating to the eyes, nose and throat: basil, Ceylon cinnamon, tarragon, wintergreen, clove, helichrysum, peppermint, compact oregano, mountain savory and thyme with thymol.
Others are not recommended because they contain a high proportion of compounds from the ketone family, such as rosemary camphor or spike lavender...
Other essential oils are not suitable for diffusion because they are slightly irritating (cypress, juniper, Scots pine, etc.) or have a particular scent that makes them unpleasant to breathe (carrot, coriander, cumin, etc.).
In this case, they should be mixed with a sweet, floral and fresh essential oil, which will temper their character: lemon, eucalyptus radiata, palmarosa, green mandarin...
